On Libertarians

“Free people create free markets. Free markets do not necessarily create free people.”

- Gupta’s Libertarian Observation

How hard is this, people? How hard? NOT THAT BLOODY HARD.

Somebody who sells themselves into slavery can be acting within a free market context, but is no longer free. Has the market created freedom? No! It has commoditized it, packaged it and sold it. The “libertarian” world of the organized crime syndicates is all about this game - “human trafficking” is usually about slavery in one form or another.

Freedom is a product if you let it be. Do not make this mistake: freedom first. If you have freedom then free markets will emerge.

But it does not work the other way round.

Wardrobe Infrastructure

Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour agreed with Kors. “Developing nations lack the basic wardrobe infrastructure to appreciate a designer scent,” Wintour said. “[Designer John] Galliano is going in a much more sensible direction with his cotton evening gown for Darfur refugees, though he’s having trouble getting the cost below $1,100. It’s a noble effort and a fine design—not that I’d personally wear it, of course.”

Good to know somebody is taking effective action! :-)

SleepBreeze blog launched

SleepBreeze now have a blog.

Welcome to the blogosphere, Andy.

Dear reader: Andy’s is the Hexayurt Project’s cooling wizard. The Man when it comes to things like heat stroke, cooling people and not whole houses, and a myriad of low energy and space efficient things. The personal coolers he’s working on promise to be a breakthrough like the wood gasfification stove, but in the cooling domain.

It’s really important stuff that I’m still just beginning to learn about, and I hope that once his products launch we’ll be able to really get into the nitty gritty of how to get these systems deployed wherever they are needed.

Set up OpenID

Using the excellent phpMyID (from http://Siege.org).

First thoughts: OpenID is clearly viable. I think it’s a winner. Now, can it be used for Unix log in, and if not, why?

Must be catch up day: DJ Thor at Sirkus, F**K the 90s, last Saturday night (i.e. a week ago)

Tellingly, this is an event I don’t have much in the way of photos or video from. I took like one lame still.

And no, you can’t see it.

But there is a soundboard recording of the entire thing, which is spectacularly good, and which I’ll hope to be able to share online at some point in the near future because, let me tell you, the man is that good and then some.

World class.

Japan nuclear power safety news: Doh!

Uncontrolled fission… again.

A Japanese power company admitted on Thursday that it had covered up a 1999 incident in which mishandling of nuclear fuel rods led to an unintended self-sustaining nuclear fission chain reaction for 15 minutes.
