Seabasing – floating bases

Interesting concept. seems that its utility in fighting is probably pretty limited, but for humanitarian interventions, being able to do this with, say, a floating hexayurt factory would be pretty damn cool.
There was a related discussion on a military related web site somewhere. They guy mentioned the importance of cranes mounted on ships so that they could unload themselves in any location, like ships used to do. Unfortunatly, the US is not doing this.
Another interesting concept was “battleboxes” or specialized boxes of stuff in offshore type containers. Could be a medical box etc. In Iraq, the u.s. personnel often stack the empty offshore containers and add doors, windows, air conditioners, stairways, etc to make little warrens of activity. Relief operations could do the same with containers as they are emptied, or even better if they were already equipped to stack or connect together and make relief or health care facilities.
